Same Principles, Different Tissue: Why I Brought Aesthetics Into My Practice

I get asked this question a lot: "Why aesthetics?"

Some people are curious. Some are a little surprised. And every so often, someone assumes I have stepped away from medicine altogether and now only do aesthetics. So let me clear that up and share the real story, because the reasons are more connected to my regenerative and hormone work than you might expect. One of them is also very personal.

Same principle, different tissue

Much of my clinical work is in regenerative medicine. I use injection therapies like prolotherapy, PRP and ozone therapy to help people recover from injuries and manage degenerative conditions in their tendons, ligaments and joints.

The principle behind these treatments is simple. The body already knows how to heal. Sometimes an area just needs a signal to get the process going again. Injured or worn connective tissue often has poor blood supply, so it gets stuck in a cycle of never quite healing. Regenerative injections create a controlled, localized response that brings in blood flow, growth factors and repair cells, so the body can rebuild and strengthen that tissue on its own.

When I started looking into aesthetics, microneedling was what caught my attention, because it works on the same principle.

Microneedling creates tiny, controlled microinjuries in the skin. That small amount of trauma tells the body to respond. Blood flow increases, the healing cascade switches on, and the skin begins producing new collagen and elastin. Pair that with the right serums applied while the skin is most receptive, and you are supporting regeneration and rejuvenation at the tissue level.

It is the same idea I use in a knee, a shoulder or a low back. The tissue is just different. For me, that was the bridge. Aesthetics did not feel like a departure from regenerative medicine. It felt like regenerative medicine applied to skin.

When how you feel doesn't match how you look

I have been working with some of my patients for over a decade. Over that time, I have noticed a mismatch come up again and again.

We do the internal work together. We lower inflammation, balance hormones, improve nutrition and get sleep back on track. My patients start to feel like themselves again, sometimes better than they have in years. Then they look in the mirror and feel like it doesn't show.

The people I work with are not looking to change their appearance. They don't want to look like someone else. Most of them want two things: to slow down how quickly they are aging, and to look as refreshed and energized as they feel on the inside.

That is a reasonable goal, and it fits naturally with caring for the whole person. If we are already supporting someone's health from the inside, it makes sense to help their outside reflect it too.

The part of midlife health no one talks about

The second reason I moved into aesthetics is one I don't think gets talked about nearly enough.

In my practice, I see a lot of women dealing with urinary issues, pelvic floor weakness and vaginal discomfort. Some are in perimenopause or menopause and are starting to notice early symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), which can include dryness, irritation, discomfort with intimacy and urinary urgency. Others are younger. They may be a few years past childbirth or have gone through significant weight loss, and they are finding that their pelvic floor just isn't what it used to be.

Most of them have been told, directly or indirectly, that this is simply part of being a woman who has had babies or is getting older. They laugh it off, cross their legs when they sneeze and plan their day around where the nearest washroom is.

I know this because I was one of them.

My story

After having three children, I developed stress urinary incontinence. If you haven't experienced it, stress incontinence means leaking urine when pressure suddenly increases in your abdomen. Coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, running and lifting can all trigger it.

It affected my life in ways that were small on their own but added up. It showed up during workouts. Running and jumping were a gamble, and I found myself changing or avoiding certain kinds of exercise. It also showed up in everyday moments like a sneeze, a big laugh, or playing with my kids. I always knew where the washroom was, and I always felt like I needed to go.

For someone whose work is about helping people stay active and keep doing what they love, it was frustrating to feel held back by my own body in such a basic way.

What changed for me

When I started researching aesthetic technologies, I was impressed by the tools now available for vaginal rejuvenation. One of these uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to gently heat the tissue of the vaginal walls. Like microneedling and my regenerative injections, it works by stimulating the body's own repair response, which supports collagen production, blood flow and tissue strength in the area.

I decided to try it myself.

The typical protocol is a series of three treatments, so I went in with realistic expectations. I had my first treatment on a Thursday. That Saturday, my son was invited to a birthday party at a trampoline park. I jumped on the trampolines with him and had no leakage. I also didn't feel the constant urge to run to the washroom every few minutes.

I was surprised by how much of a difference one treatment made for me. Everyone's body is different, and results vary from person to person, but that experience stayed with me. I remember thinking that this was something I wanted to be able to offer the women I work with.

Since then, I have kept my results up with a maintenance session at BioRevive using Emsella. Emsella takes a different approach. You sit fully clothed on a chair that uses electromagnetic energy to trigger deep pelvic floor muscle contractions, many more than you could do on your own in the same amount of time. RF works on the tissue, and Emsella works on the muscle. Because there is no undressing and no downtime, it is easy to fit into a busy day, which matters when you are juggling a practice and three kids.

Who this can help

What I value about RF vaginal treatment is that it fills a gap. Vaginal estrogen is an excellent, well supported option for many women with GSM, and it remains an important part of the care I offer through my hormone work. However, not every woman is at a stage of life where vaginal estrogen is the right fit, and some prefer to start with other options.

A woman in her thirties or early forties who is dealing with postpartum pelvic floor changes may not be thinking about menopause yet, but she still deserves real solutions. RF treatment, Emsella, or a combination of the two can be part of that plan. Neither is a replacement for pelvic floor physiotherapy, strength work or hormone support when those are needed. They work alongside them, and the right combination depends on what is going on for each woman.

Inside and out, under one roof

When I opened BioRevive, I made a deliberate choice to include a full aesthetics department. We have trained aestheticians who provide those treatments, and a nurse injector who offers injectable treatments. I am not trying to do everything myself. I built a team so each part of your care is in skilled hands.

What makes this model special to me is where we get to start. We already know a lot about what is happening inside our patients. We understand their hormone picture, their inflammation, their nutrition, their sleep and their stress. That puts us in a great position to recommend external treatments that actually suit the person in front of us, and to time them in a way that supports their overall health.

It also shapes how we practise aesthetics. Many of the people who come to us for aesthetic treatments come because they trust us. They know we are not there to upsell, push more treatments or use as much product as possible. Our goal is to preserve and gently enhance your natural features, so that you look like yourself on a really good day.

The bottom line

I didn't bring aesthetics into my practice to move away from medicine. I brought it in because the best aesthetic treatments follow the same regenerative principles I have built my career on. I also brought it in because I watched too many women, including myself, quietly put up with symptoms that affected their confidence, their activity and their quality of life.

Feeling well and looking well are connected. So is feeling strong and being able to jump on a trampoline with your kids without a second thought.
